Why are my goldfish sitting at the bottem of my aquarium?
For some reason, every once in awhile my three goldfish will sit on the bottem of my aquarium, they don't move unless I tap the glass and they seem extra jittery. They settle behind the plants i have in there.

Safe wood for aquarium that can be found 'in the wild'?
Which types of natural wood are safe for aquarium use? I'm assuming that most wood that has been dead for a while so theres no sap, and that hasn't been overly exposed to chemicals would be safe. I see lots of nice pieces when I go fishing, but am not sure how safe they would be to put in the tank. None of the local fish stores sell driftwood, so I'm thinking about finding a nice chunk for my 55 gal tank and mounting it to slate myself. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. eb
What will happen if I use live plants in my aquarium without substrate?
I already have my aquarium set up, and I plan to get live plants for the zebra oto I ordered. About how long will live plants last in a tank with just plain gravel? And I don't want to put potted plants into my tank. I want it to look more natural.
Can you answer some aquarium questions?
I have just cleaned and tested a 20 gallon high tank around 24x12x17 . You can call me a new fish owner. I do have most of the equipment though. Here are my questions 1. I want to get a dark tank, which kind of lights do I need? 2. Some of the fish that I want need a densely planted tank, some need floating plants, some need roots, others need hiding places. How should I do this?3 Will these fish go together, and how many of each I'm starting out with at least one Platy, or Black Molly ? Platy or Black Molly Striped Pleckolita Brown Pencilfish Clown Killi Lamp eyed Panchax Ram Chichlid Cardinal Tetra Akure Aplocheilidae Five Banded Killifish Maybe Dwarf Platannas it's a frog 4. What are some good stores for getting fish supplies I live in the Ottawa Ontario, Canada area 5.5. Is it bad to have an aqarium in your room?6. Look out for more questions from me And thanks in advance. When I say dark tank, I mean that in the book that I have read, it says that the fish I have picked out need to live in dark tanks low light .and I have 2 other questions 7. Do I still need to use water purifier drops if I use spring water in my aquarium?
I have a goldfish and when doing partial water changes, I only use bottled spring water. I never use water purifier because I assume the water is already pure and free of chemicals.Should I buy distilled water instead of spring water? It is hard to be precise with water purifier because my aquarium is only 6.5 gallons and has one goldfish...

Fresh water aquarium questions...?
I recently bought a 14 gallon aquarium, complete with a filter and a heater for warm, fresh water fish. I filled the aquarium with purified water and ran the filter for a day prior to putting fish in it. Then I put about six fish in it, and the next day, the water was already cloudy and starting to smell bad. The filter is working fine, and I have a few snails and " sucker fish" in the tank to help keep it clean, and as I said before, I used purified water to fill the tank, so I don't understand why the water is already looking and smelling bad. Is that a normal occurrence when you're initially setting up a new aquarium, or...? If not, I think it may possibly be due to me dumping some of the water from the bags that the fish came in, into the aquarium. I didn't dump all of the water from the bags into it, of course, but probably enough to start a growth of bacteria in the tank...? Do you think that's why the water is already looking and smelling like that?Oh, and what's the best way to get rid of the cloudiness and smell, aside from dumping the aquarium and starting all over? I don't want to do that and put more stress on the fish unless absolutely necessary. So I put some Jungle Labs " Clean Water" additive into the water, which is supposed to get rid of cloudiness and odors within 48 hours, but I'm impatient, and I want something that will work quickly LOL. Any other ideas?
